Riparian plant life is what grows alongside and is dependent upon the stream. The county of Santa Cruz passed an ordinance to protect Riparian corridors and wetlands because of their high value. Riparian plants grow and provide shade over streams for fish and other animals. They also provide food and shelter for wildlife. Their roots prevent erosion and filter out pollutants. As they die, they decompose and enrich the soil. Large woody material, such as dead trees, provide habitat and slow the flow of streams. In Santa Cruz, common native Riparian plants are alders, oaks, and willows. Riparian forests are often very dense and full of many different kinds of plants. Some common non-native plants are periwinkle, English ivy, Monterey Pine, and hemlock. Redwood is seen occasionally, such as in Aptos Creek, but isn't a main feature of Riparian forests in this area.
